TUC calls for creation of four more bank holidays to improve “stingy” entitlement.

    • Workers in England and Wales get four fewer public holidays than the EU average
    • Some countries enjoy almost twice as many public holidays as the “stingy” amount given in England and Wales
    • TUC calls on government to create a new public holiday between now and Christmas

The TUC is today (Monday) calling on the government to create four new public holidays as workers enjoy the last long weekend of the summer.

Workers in England and Wales get just eight bank holidays a year, which is much fewer than other countries.

In the EU, every country gets more public holidays than the UK. And the EU average is 12.8 days, which is almost 5 days more than UK workers get.

Romania, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Finland and Cyprus top the EU table, with 15 days each – nearly twice as many public holidays as workers in England and Wales.

Beyond Europe, workers in other major economies get more public holidays too. This year there are 17 public holidays in Japan, 12 in Australia and 11 in China and New Zealand.

The TUC says all UK workers should get at least 12 public holidays and is calling for a national conversation about when people would like them to be.

To make sure that no workers miss out, the union body says extra public holidays must be reflected in statutory holiday entitlement. And any workers required to work on public holidays should have the right to a pay premium or time off in lieu.

TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“The August bank holiday will be a welcome break for everyone working hard to get us through the pandemic – especially those on the frontline.

“But after August, there’s no national holiday until Christmas. And that’s because the number of holidays we get is so stingy compared to other nations.

“A few more public holidays would be a great way to thank working Britain for getting us through these tough times. And it would level us up with other workers around the world.

“It’s time for a national conversation – when should our new holidays be? What might they celebrate? An autumn holiday to break the long stretch to Christmas would be a good start.”

A very large number of the TUC's union members have enjoyed a very long holiday on furlough, courtesy of Covid, and are battling hard to keep it that way by working from home if it's at all possible....

And a very large number of them have lost their jobs over the last 18 months through no fault of their own. What's wrong with working from home also?

And why bring furlough anyway into what is a completely separate discussion about the appropriate number of bank holidays we get in this country?

Typical union policy, looking after their members rights, fighting to end low pay and discrimination in the workplace, and campaigning to increase the number of paid bank holidays.

Unions are there to benefit employees, not employers.
Been a member of Unite for over 25 years and the small monthly contribution I make has easily payed for itself over the years.

I enjoy a competitive salary that keeps up with inflation. The last time we were forced to take strike action, the union covered our wages and as a result the employer soon folded and met our reasonable demands.

If your work place is unionised, join them!

The vast majority of furloughed workers were receiving 80% of their normal wage. A large proportion of them will have been in low paid jobs living hand to mouth. Any reduction in income will have caused further hardship, especially if their partners became unemployed or put on furlough too. Hardly a ‘very long holiday’.

And how can you class working from home as a holiday? It isn’t, it’s work.

And of course they work just as hard from home, putting in the same hours.

They were getting Government support to eventually, it was anticipated, be able to return to their employment - nothing wrong with that and they were also able to save a certain amount in many cases due to reductions in travel and other costs.

Working from home provides similar benefits if taken up, but quite a number have enjoyed the long break and have not returned to their original employment, instead finding different jobs. That's caused a lot of problems, including the shortage of truck drivers.

Truck drivers working at home, seriously? lol.
Brexit, problems at DVLA and low pay is why there’s a HGV driver shortage in this country.
